The second verb in these two examples is conjugated in the imparfait. Le conditionnel can also be used on its own in a sentence if you are making a polite request or stating something you would like to see happen. Here are two examples: Je voudrais du rosboeuf avec des pommes de terre. I would like some roast beef with potatoes. Jaimerais aller au Quebec cet été. Id like to go to Quebec this summer. How to Conjugate  le Conditionnel The conditional form is relatively easy to conjugate, because  it combines roots and endings you have most likely seen before. Use the same root you would for le futur  (usually the infinitive form of the verb, or the infinitive form minus a final -e where applicable), and add the same endings you would for the imparfait. For the verbs parler  (a regular verb) and vouloir (which has an irregular root), the conjugations would look like this: Je ? parlerais, voudrais Tu ? parlerais, voudrais Il/elle/on ? parlerait, voudrait Nous ? parlerions, voudrions Vous ? parleriez, voudriez Ils/Elles ? parleraient, voudraient If in doubt as to which roots are irregular, you can review some of the irregular future roots here. Ayona: The University of Texas at Arlington is a very academic campus that provides a variety of transportation options. The UTARI shuttle bus is very convenient for students who need a ride to class or want to tour the campus. In addition, the Mavs Courtesy Escort is very helpful when traveling on campus after hours to ensure the safety of students. One day after leaving the library at 2 a.m., I had to walk back to my car which was parked in a garage on the opposite side of campus. I felt safe because I was able to use the courtesy shuttle. Due to the surrounding neighbors and local school districts, UTA is a very rural campus. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Ayona:The professors have scheduled office hours where they are available to assist students. In most cases, they are willing to schedule a meeting outside of their office hours to meet the needs of a student. To set up a meeting with an academic adviser, you are able to go online, which was very convenient. How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Ayona:Although I lived off-campus, I have heard from friends that dorm life is very beneficial. Living on campus helps to expand social life, because you have more access to events and social gatherings. Many guest speakers and concerts are held on campus as well. UTA has a dining hall that provides a buffet for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There are also restaurants available, such as Pie Five, Chick-fil-A, Bombay Chopsticks, Panera Bread, and many more. There are three Starbucks located on campus, which is where I spent a lot of time and money. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Ayona:Engineering and nursing are the top two majors at UTA. I received my bachelors degree in English. I chose this degree because of my strong passion for education reform. I want to teach English language arts and reading, improve education in low income schools, and progress toward becoming a college professor. The university was very supportive in helping me reach my goals. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Ayona:Although I was not involved in Greek life, it does play a major role in social life. I was able to meet new friends in most of my classes, because many of my classes involved group projects. How helpful are the Career Centerand other student support services? Ayona:The Career Center is very helpful for students who are looking to begin work in the corporate world. They connect you with many employers, help you develop skills to succeed as a professional, and host many job fairs on campus. How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Ayona:There are many areas for students to study, including the library, the UC (University Center), or in each academic building. The library has six floors and offers a variety of seating and computers designated for study. The UC not only has dining, but provides an abundant amount of space to study. Since the UC is also used for dining, it does get crowded around lunchtime. Any other time, seating is easily available. There are also many study areas outside to enjoy on a nice sunny day. Describe the surrounding town. Ayona:UTA is within a few minutes of theme parks such as Six Flags and Hurricane Harbor. Many sporting events also take place locally. Although we are located in Arlington, the campus is only about a half hour from downtown Dallas, where you can enjoy museums and performing arts centers. If you want to enjoy a night out with friends, there are many exquisite restaurants to choose from. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Ayona:UTA has over 30,000 students from many different backgrounds. I was always pleased with the class sizes because they were never over-crowded. They usually consisted of 20-35 students. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Ayona:I really enjoyed Dr. Rambsys English courses, because we were able to combine literature with pop culture. I took a literature course dedicated to the rapper Jay-Z where we analyzed his lyrics, had class discussions about meaning of texts, and presented our findings using graphs and other online tools. Our findings included data such as the number of metaphors or slant rhymes that were used in his lyrics. We also compared Jay-Zs lyrics to the Autobiography of Frederick Douglass. Typically, literature courses engage students in close reading of poets from Emily Dickinson to John Donne. Six Things to Pay Attention to on the First Report Card Your child has been back in school for a month or two by now, which means theres an important milestone coming up: the first report card of the year. As Eileen Huntington of Huntington Learning Center explains, the first report card is telling and significant. Parents should give the report card much more than a glance, says Huntington. This early checkup shares a lot about how children are progressing in all subjects so far as well as how ready they were or werent for the grade. As you review your childs first report card of the year, Huntington suggests paying careful attention to these six things: The grades Grades are the most obvious sign of how your child is doing in school. Look at both the grades themselves and the change in grades from last year. Did your child end sixth grade math with an A but now has a B- at the start of seventh grade? Teacher comments about behavior Read all remarks about your childs academic attitude and classroom behavior. Does the teacher mention concern about responsibility, self-control, ability to work well with others, aggressiveness or anything else? Does the teacher commend your child for his or her work ethic, attitude or team effort? Areas of strength Remember that the report card isnt just a tool for identifying problems. Take note of positive comments about your child as well. Your teacher gets to know your child on a different level, after all. He or she might notice aspects of your childs personality and performance that are special or exceed expectations. Marks or comments about study habits and organization Good study skills are essential, and the further your child progresses in school, the more important they become. Look for any indicators about your childs study habits and organizational/time management skills (or lack thereof). Areas of progress Its only the first report card of the year, but the teacher might have included measurements about your childs progress toward grade-level standards for the year or the semester. Notes about potential Straight As looks great, but you must read between the lines a little on report cards as well. Did your child forgo honors English for regular English, receiving an A+ on the report card? Just as you do not want your child to be overly challenged in school, you dont want your child to lose opportunities to reach his or her potential. A conversation with the teacher might help you better assess whether your child is being appropriately pushed. Huntington reminds parents that the report card is just one tool to help them support their children. Being involved as a parent and communicating frequently with teachers is absolutely critical, he/she says. Its also vital that you establish a good working relationship with your child regarding school. Set expectations and support your child as a student by asking about school often. And when questions about the report card do come up, have an open conversation with your child as well as any teachers or guidance counselors. NACAC membership is voluntary, but members agree to uphold the Code of Ethics and Professional Practice in order to promote best professional college admission practices. Acting upon an inquiry by the U.S. Department of Justice into these provisions violation of antitrust laws, NACACs Assembly voted at the 2019 National Conference in September to remove a few sections from its code of conduct. Why? To address the Department of Justices belief that those provisions inhibit competition among colleges for students. Heres what the removed sections covered: Offering exclusive incentives for early decision. Previously, the ethics code stated that NACAC member colleges must not offer incentives such as special housing, enhanced financial aid packages and special scholarships to early decision applicants or admits. Recruiting first-year undergraduates who have committed to other schools. This section essentially prohibited member colleges from knowingly recruiting or offering enrollment incentives to students who are already enrolled or have declared their intent to enroll (or submitted contractual deposits) at other colleges. The code referenced May 1 as the point when enrollment commitments become final and mentioned the fact that colleges must respect those commitments. Two notable exceptions to the no-recruiting rule were when students were admitted from a wait list and the students initiated the inquiries themselves. Recruiting transfer students. NACAC member colleges were not allowed to solicit transfer applicants from a previous years applicant or prospect pool unless the students initiated that transfer inquiry. Colleges were allowed to recruit transfer students if they first verified that the students were enrolled at a college that allowed transfer recruitment or the students were not currently enrolled. Ultimately, the Justice Department argued that the above provisions restricted fair tradeor in other words, they prevented colleges from competing for students. Now that theyre removed, the recruiting practices of college admissions departments could change. How might this impact your college-bound teen? Time will tell, but you might see colleges more aggressively recruiting students even after theyve already committed themselves elsewhere. If colleges want certain students, they might find creative ways to entice them with financial aid or housing. Some in the industry have even questioned whether well see more high school seniors continuing to debate their college decision well into the summer before college begins. However it all plays out, one thing is certain: it is always important for your teen to make him or herself an attractive college candidate by earning good grades, performing his or her best on the SAT and ACT, and developing a strong college resume. Every college wants to attract the best possible freshman class, after all. Remind your teen that it is essential to stay focused and finish high school strong, because colleges are paying attention.
