French Grammar Rules Conjugating Verbs in the Conditional

French Grammar Rules Conjugating Verbs in the Conditional Sign up successful Jirais au supermarché sil était ouvert. I would go to the supermarket if it were open. Elle assisterait a lécole si elle était assez agée. She would attend school if she were old enough. Note that le conditionnel is used for the action that is NOT part of the “if” phrase. The second verb in these two examples is conjugated in the imparfait. Le conditionnel can also be used on its own in a sentence if you are making a polite request or stating something you would like to see happen. Here are two examples: Je voudrais du rosboeuf avec des pommes de terre. I would like some roast beef with potatoes. Jaimerais aller au Quebec cet été. Id like to go to Quebec this summer. How to Conjugate  le Conditionnel The conditional form is relatively easy to conjugate, because  it combines roots and endings you have most likely seen before. Use the same root you would for le futur  (usually the infinitive form of the verb, or the infinitive form minus a final -e where applicable), and add the same endings you would for the imparfait. For the verbs parler  (a regular verb) and vouloir (which has an irregular root), the conjugations would look like this: Je ? parlerais, voudrais Tu ? parlerais, voudrais Il/elle/on ? parlerait, voudrait Nous ? parlerions, voudrions Vous ? parleriez, voudriez Ils/Elles ? parleraient, voudraient If in doubt as to which roots are irregular, you can review some of the irregular future roots here. Time to Practice! Now that you know how and when to use le conditionnel, try your hand at the example sentences  below. Be careful with the sentences that contain two verbs: One will be conjugated using the imparfait, and the other using the conditionnel. Si j ___________ (étudier) avec lui, je ___________ (pouvoir) réussir mon exam. If I studied with him, I would be able to pass my exam successfully. Ils ___________ (aimer) parler avec leur frère. They would like to speak with their brother. Si tu ___________ (finir) tes devoirs tous les jours, tu ___________ (avoir) de bonnes notes. If you finished your homework every day, you would have good grades. Nous ___________ (vouloir) de la salade. We would like some salad. Si vous ___________ (vouloir) aller au Quebec, vous ___________ (garder) votre argent. If you wanted to go to Quebec, you would keep / save your money. How do you think you did? Check your answers below:  Ã©tudiais, pourrais aimeraient finissais, aurais voudrions vouliez, garderiez If you didnt do well, keep reviewing and practicing your French grammar skills. Either way, begin looking and listening for uses of le conditionnel  as you listen and read to seek out opportunities to practice using it as you speak and write. Look for someone to correct your usage if you make a mistake, and you will improve quickly! Should I Go to the University of Texas at Arlington

Should I Go to the University of Texas at Arlington Ayona earned her bachelors degree in English from the University of Texas at Arlington. She specializes in American literature tutoring, writing tutoring, and a number of other subjects. Below, she shares her experience at the University of Texas at Arlington: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Ayona: The University of Texas at Arlington is a very academic campus that provides a variety of transportation options. The UTARI shuttle bus is very convenient for students who need a ride to class or want to tour the campus. In addition, the Mavs Courtesy Escort is very helpful when traveling on campus after hours to ensure the safety of students. One day after leaving the library at 2 a.m., I had to walk back to my car which was parked in a garage on the opposite side of campus. I felt safe because I was able to use the courtesy shuttle. Due to the surrounding neighbors and local school districts, UTA is a very rural campus. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Ayona:The professors have scheduled office hours where they are available to assist students. In most cases, they are willing to schedule a meeting outside of their office hours to meet the needs of a student. To set up a meeting with an academic adviser, you are able to go online, which was very convenient. How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Ayona:Although I lived off-campus, I have heard from friends that dorm life is very beneficial. Living on campus helps to expand social life, because you have more access to events and social gatherings. Many guest speakers and concerts are held on campus as well. UTA has a dining hall that provides a buffet for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There are also restaurants available, such as Pie Five, Chick-fil-A, Bombay Chopsticks, Panera Bread, and many more. There are three Starbucks located on campus, which is where I spent a lot of time and money. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Ayona:Engineering and nursing are the top two majors at UTA. I received my bachelors degree in English. I chose this degree because of my strong passion for education reform. I want to teach English language arts and reading, improve education in low income schools, and progress toward becoming a college professor. The university was very supportive in helping me reach my goals. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Ayona:Although I was not involved in Greek life, it does play a major role in social life. I was able to meet new friends in most of my classes, because many of my classes involved group projects. How helpful are the Career Centerand other student support services? Ayona:The Career Center is very helpful for students who are looking to begin work in the corporate world. They connect you with many employers, help you develop skills to succeed as a professional, and host many job fairs on campus. How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Ayona:There are many areas for students to study, including the library, the UC (University Center), or in each academic building. The library has six floors and offers a variety of seating and computers designated for study. The UC not only has dining, but provides an abundant amount of space to study. Since the UC is also used for dining, it does get crowded around lunchtime. Any other time, seating is easily available. There are also many study areas outside to enjoy on a nice sunny day. Describe the surrounding town. Ayona:UTA is within a few minutes of theme parks such as Six Flags and Hurricane Harbor. Many sporting events also take place locally. Although we are located in Arlington, the campus is only about a half hour from downtown Dallas, where you can enjoy museums and performing arts centers. If you want to enjoy a night out with friends, there are many exquisite restaurants to choose from. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Ayona:UTA has over 30,000 students from many different backgrounds. I was always pleased with the class sizes because they were never over-crowded. They usually consisted of 20-35 students. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Ayona:I really enjoyed Dr. Rambsys English courses, because we were able to combine literature with pop culture. I took a literature course dedicated to the rapper Jay-Z where we analyzed his lyrics, had class discussions about meaning of texts, and presented our findings using graphs and other online tools. Our findings included data such as the number of metaphors or slant rhymes that were used in his lyrics. We also compared Jay-Zs lyrics to the Autobiography of Frederick Douglass. Typically, literature courses engage students in close reading of poets from Emily Dickinson to John Donne. However, if you really think about it, rap is also poetry, which makes it relevant in the academic world. Check out Ayonas tutoring profile. (Source: Crazy Banana)A tutor will provide their student with a method to help them progress during a lesson. However, they can't constantly look over their student’s shoulder outside of cla ss. This means that the student needs to practice on their own.How often should a student work individually on their piano exercises? It takes regular practice to learn how to play the piano: playing for three hours once in a while or just before your lessons isn’t enough to improve and will probably render your lessons ineffective. You need to focus and memorize things. You could say that you should practice the piano whenever you want. This might sound a bit like a cliché but you should play whenever you feel like playing. Just make sure when you do that it’s effective practice and not just messing around.Doing two hours of practice before your tutorials is a quick way to slow down your progress. It’s essential to put aside some time every day to practice playing the piano. At least half an hour a day should be enough. Making sure that you practice a certain piece means that you’ll have to stop doing whatever you were doing instead. What if you can’t read the piece from yo ur last piano lesson? Have a look on-line for tutorials. There are plenty of free piano lessons on-line and video tutorials that could help. A quick on-line search should get you the results you're looking for. However, if you’re genuinely motivated and want to learn, you won’t feel like you’re giving up any time at all.  We recommend thirty minutes of practice after dinner before you turn on the TV. This is when you tend to be at your most creative. However, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. Everyone learns differently. You need to find the routine that works for you. Some people learn more quickly than others.  Some people may learn something in an hour while others may need four hours. It completely depends on your motivation. However, there are some things than anyone wanting to become a pianist should know:Practice should always be enjoyable. You need to focus and activate your memory in order for any learning to be effective. The more you practice, the more your finger s will separate and the easier you’ll find playing across several octaves. You’ll gain more and more dexterity. How Can I Improve My Dexterity?Improving their dexterity really annoys a number pianists. However, your private tutor can help you work on this. When we say dexterity, we're talking about your ability to quickly and accurately navigate the keyboard with your hands, especially when the notes are fairly far apart.Dexterity can improve how well you hit your piano targets. (Source: Wikimedia Commons)When you first start, your hands will probably be fairly stiff. The quickest way to improve your dexterity is to practice:do exercises going up and down octaves.learn to go from one chord to another quickly and fluidly.do exercises to improve your finger span: flex your fingers.play scales on the piano: start slowly and then get faster and fasterwork on common chord progressionsget used to not looking at your fingers when you’re playing. You’ll soon start to make more and mor e progress. These exercises will be hugely beneficial in the long-term, especially if you’d like to one day be able to sing and play at the same time, compose your own music, and become a skilled and well-rounded pianist in the process.Once you feel comfortable playing your scales at relatively quick speed, start working on your coordination by playing sections with your left hand, then your right, and finally combing the two together. First slowly, then more quickly. You should always practice your scales just before your lessons. First C major, then D major, etc. It’s good for warming up your fingers and mentally preparing your ear for music. Having a good knowledge of your scales is also great for improvising with other musicians.A budding musician should master their scales in order to learn as quickly and as effectively as possible. Use piano methods:  Hanon and Czerny exercises are great for warming up your fingers and getting better and putting chords together. In order to improve your dexterity, you should regularly do these exercises. This will help you to play with precision and train your fingers to play the piano better. Every good pianist should be able to play chords and arpeggios precisely. What’s the next step? It’s basically playing two instruments at the same time and it's not easy.Singing and playing at the same time may be difficult but it's not impossible. (Source: PeakPX)Even a privately taught pianist can forget everything when they have to start singing. To sing and play at the same time, you have to first master the piano part, then the singing part, then bring the two parts together.  When bringing the two parts together, you need to both coordinate your two hands then synchronize them with your voice. In the same way you coordinate your two hands when learning to play the piano, you’ll have to repeat the same process in order to sing while you play. It’s recommended that you start with a fairly simple song with a simple chord progression and no vocal gymnastics.  Choose a song in common time (4/4) in C-major, for example. You should also try playing the song while humming before you try singing along. This allows you to focus on the vocal melody and the piano part. This means you won’t get distracted by trying to rem ember the lyrics. If you really want to learn to sing and play piano at the same time, you need to learn your source material inside out. You need to know every vocal nuance by heart. To summarize, here are the key points for singing and playing piano at the same time:Be patient, determined, and persevering.Adopt a good posture for playing and singing.Play the piano part and practice the singing part separately.Choose a simple song.Play the song while speaking (to see if you know it well enough).Listen to the original song a lot.Break down the lyrics into syllables.Use a metronome or tap your foot to keep time.More complex songs require more work. Perhaps you need to simplify the music itself.Your private tutor should be able to help you with simplifying the piece.Has your search for piano lessons London yielded satisfactory results? Why not check out Superprof's piano teachers, now! How Can You Simplify a Piano Piece? It might be beneficial to simplify the piece in order to make it mo re playable on the piano.Being able to simplify piano music is one of your most important tools. (Source: Tanner Randall)Some songs are incredibly complex, unreadable, or contain substitutions (which are very common in jazz).Simplifying a song by making it more playable on the piano is sometimes necessary if the person playing the piece doesn’t have the necessary level to play the song in all its complexity. This is much better than discouraging the pianist. It’s also a good idea to listen to the song plenty of times before trying to simplify it.  Make a note of the chords as you listen and play them on the piano. This practice will help you get to know the song much better than just listening to it.Identify the chords, then practice the chord progression, starting off slowly and getting faster and faster until you’re playing at the same tempo as the song. You have to work out the main chords in order to pick apart a song.Finding the root note of each chord is essential when it comes to analyzing a song.  The pianist can then work out the chord’s harmonies and whether the chord is a major chord, minor chord, a fifth, seventh, etc.  You need to be familiar with music theory in order to do this.If you’ve been working on your dexterity, you should be able to put these chord progressions together yourself. How Do You Compose a Piano Piece? Here’s some advice for composing a piece for piano: Know your music theory and think creatively. To become a composer, you need to be inspired. (Source: pxhere)Have a good technical ability: you can’t compose as a beginner.  You need to know how to put chords together, their inversions, common rhythms, etc.You also need to have a good knowledge of music, different genres and styles, etc.  Be familiar with reading sheet music: reading sheet music like you would a book.  You need to encourage imagination and creativity in order to compose a piece on piano. It’s difficult but also very rewarding.Use a metronome to impr ove your rhythm. It might be annoying to listen to but it’ll ensure that you’re always in time. Make sure you know your time signatures. Is this going to be a waltz or a march?Choose the right chords to work with the feel of your piece. Remember that minor chords tend to give a piece a melancholic feel. On the other hand, major chords feel optimistic and happy. You also need to think about the lyrics. Make sure the chords go well together: certain progression evoke certain feelings.Once you’ve considered all this, you need to work out how you’re going to play it.You can use the chords to focus on the the song’s rhythmic qualities. What about deconstructing the chords and playing them as arpeggios to give the song a more melodic quality.Don’t forget to record your creations!  Sometimes you’ll come up with nothing. However, sometimes you’ll stumble upon something amazing. You’d hate to forget what it was, right?  With a microphone and a music program, you can start p utting your ideas together and working on them.  It’s always a good idea to record yourself when you’re improvising.  Then you can listen back to it and write down what you did. Make sure your theory’s good.Becoming a pianist is basically and long and difficult journey. However, this is what’s so beautiful about the piano. It’ll be worth it in the end!

Six Things to Pay Attention to on the First Report Card

Six Things to Pay Attention to on the First Report Card Your child has been back in school for a month or two by now, which means theres an important milestone coming up: the first report card of the year. As Eileen Huntington of Huntington Learning Center explains, the first report card is telling and significant. Parents should give the report card much more than a glance, says Huntington. This early checkup shares a lot about how children are progressing in all subjects so far as well as how ready they were or werent for the grade. As you review your childs first report card of the year, Huntington suggests paying careful attention to these six things: The grades Grades are the most obvious sign of how your child is doing in school. Look at both the grades themselves and the change in grades from last year. Did your child end sixth grade math with an A but now has a B- at the start of seventh grade? Teacher comments about behavior Read all remarks about your childs academic attitude and classroom behavior. Does the teacher mention concern about responsibility, self-control, ability to work well with others, aggressiveness or anything else? Does the teacher commend your child for his or her work ethic, attitude or team effort? Areas of strength Remember that the report card isnt just a tool for identifying problems. Take note of positive comments about your child as well. Your teacher gets to know your child on a different level, after all. He or she might notice aspects of your childs personality and performance that are special or exceed expectations. Marks or comments about study habits and organization Good study skills are essential, and the further your child progresses in school, the more important they become. Look for any indicators about your childs study habits and organizational/time management skills (or lack thereof). Areas of progress Its only the first report card of the year, but the teacher might have included measurements about your childs progress toward grade-level standards for the year or the semester. Notes about potential Straight As looks great, but you must read between the lines a little on report cards as well. Did your child forgo honors English for regular English, receiving an A+ on the report card? Just as you do not want your child to be overly challenged in school, you dont want your child to lose opportunities to reach his or her potential. A conversation with the teacher might help you better assess whether your child is being appropriately pushed. Huntington reminds parents that the report card is just one tool to help them support their children. Being involved as a parent and communicating frequently with teachers is absolutely critical, he/she says. Its also vital that you establish a good working relationship with your child regarding school. Set expectations and support your child as a student by asking about school often. And when questions about the report card do come up, have an open conversation with your child as well as any teachers or guidance counselors. If the first report card of the school year had a few unfortunate surprises or you have other concerns about your childs academic performance, call Huntingtonthe earlier in the year, the better. School problems rarely go away. The longer theyre ignored, the harder it is for children to catch up and rebuild their self-esteem. NACAC Changes Its Ethics Code

NACAC Changes Its Ethics Code If youve been paying attention to college-related news in recent months, you might have heard about the decision made by the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) to remove several provisions from its Code of Ethics and Professional Practice. The NACAC was founded in 1937 and is an organization of more than 15,000 professionals from around the world dedicated to serving students as they make choices about pursuing postsecondary education. NACAC membership is voluntary, but members agree to uphold the Code of Ethics and Professional Practice in order to promote best professional college admission practices. Acting upon an inquiry by the U.S. Department of Justice into these provisions violation of antitrust laws, NACACs Assembly voted at the 2019 National Conference in September to remove a few sections from its code of conduct. Why? To address the Department of Justices belief that those provisions inhibit competition among colleges for students. Heres what the removed sections covered: Offering exclusive incentives for early decision. Previously, the ethics code stated that NACAC member colleges must not offer incentives such as special housing, enhanced financial aid packages and special scholarships to early decision applicants or admits. Recruiting first-year undergraduates who have committed to other schools. This section essentially prohibited member colleges from knowingly recruiting or offering enrollment incentives to students who are already enrolled or have declared their intent to enroll (or submitted contractual deposits) at other colleges. The code referenced May 1 as the point when enrollment commitments become final and mentioned the fact that colleges must respect those commitments. Two notable exceptions to the no-recruiting rule were when students were admitted from a wait list and the students initiated the inquiries themselves. Recruiting transfer students. NACAC member colleges were not allowed to solicit transfer applicants from a previous years applicant or prospect pool unless the students initiated that transfer inquiry. Colleges were allowed to recruit transfer students if they first verified that the students were enrolled at a college that allowed transfer recruitment or the students were not currently enrolled. Ultimately, the Justice Department argued that the above provisions restricted fair tradeor in other words, they prevented colleges from competing for students. Now that theyre removed, the recruiting practices of college admissions departments could change. How might this impact your college-bound teen? Time will tell, but you might see colleges more aggressively recruiting students even after theyve already committed themselves elsewhere. If colleges want certain students, they might find creative ways to entice them with financial aid or housing. Some in the industry have even questioned whether well see more high school seniors continuing to debate their college decision well into the summer before college begins. However it all plays out, one thing is certain: it is always important for your teen to make him or herself an attractive college candidate by earning good grades, performing his or her best on the SAT and ACT, and developing a strong college resume. Every college wants to attract the best possible freshman class, after all. Remind your teen that it is essential to stay focused and finish high school strong, because colleges are paying attention.
